Installing cPanel & WHM prepares a server to host accounts, websites and potentially email. This work belongs to an authorized administrator of a compatible dedicated or virtual server. If Nuagerie already provides your cPanel hosting, use the existing panel: you do not need to install it.
On a new server, preparation matters as much as installation. An accessible panel does not establish that applications, backups and email are ready for production.
1. Confirm the platform and access
- Compatible system: check the operating system, its version and the intended cPanel release tier against the official compatibility matrix. An old procedure does not establish current support.
- Clean installation: cPanel requires a freshly installed operating system. Prepare a separate destination if websites or data already exist; do not install it over another control panel or a production application stack.
- Administration: installation requires
rootaccess. A cPanel or reseller account does not replace it. Arrange access to the provider’s console in case SSH becomes unavailable. - Capacity: check architecture, virtualization, memory and storage against your system’s requirements. Also account for databases, mailboxes, logs, backups and growth; the installation minimum is not a capacity guarantee.
2. Prepare licensing and networking
Confirm a cPanel license appropriate for the server and planned account count. The provider should validate the static public IP address eligible for licensing; IPv6-only servers are not supported. If the network uses address translation, verify compatibility before installation.
Choose a fully qualified hostname that resolves correctly and differs from hosted domains. Check outbound DNS resolution, software repositories and required network access. cPanel’s networking prerequisites illustrate these constraints; also consult the requirements for your operating system. Firewall and OS-specific settings belong in the administrator’s preparation plan, with recovery access available.
3. Protect data and plan migration
Keep verified backups outside the machine being replaced. Inventory websites, databases, email, scheduled tasks, PHP versions and required dependencies. Define a migration window, final data synchronization and conditions for returning to the old server.
The WHM Transfer Tool can assist with some transfers, but review its options and exclusions. It can also change DNS depending on the selected configuration. Keep control of the cutover and records for external services, particularly email.
4. Follow the official installation procedure
Once prerequisites are confirmed, the administrator follows cPanel’s current procedure, which provides the command to download and run the official installer. It installs the required services; avoid concurrent installations or improvised changes to its options.
cPanel does not provide an uninstaller. Returning to a server without cPanel requires rebuilding the system. If installation fails, retain the message and logs, then consult the official troubleshooting guide before restarting the operation or bypassing a check.
5. Validate before bringing users onto the server
- Confirm installation completed, licensing works, and WHM is accessible over HTTPS with a certificate matching the hostname used.
- Check alert contacts, updates, administrator access and the selected security configuration.
- Configure backup destinations and retention, then verify an appropriate restore. Successful installation does not automatically establish your backup strategy.
- Test applications, databases, certificates, scheduled tasks and, where applicable, incoming and outgoing email.
Complete these checks before the DNS cutover. Retain the old environment for the agreed validation period and monitor errors after migration.
