Email forwarding lets another address receive new messages sent to an address you manage. It can help you monitor an older address or bring incoming mail into one inbox. Before enabling it, decide who should receive those messages and how your team will retain important conversations.
Choose the right place to configure it
First identify the service that actually hosts email for the source address. A website hosted with Nuagerie can use email managed by another provider. In that case, configure forwarding in the relevant email service. If you are unsure, ask us to confirm the right place before changing settings.
For an address whose email is handled by cPanel, follow our cPanel email forwarder setup guide. It covers the available interfaces, destination checks and delivery tests. Use that procedure when configuring forwarding for an individual address.
Understand what forwarding does
- Forwarding applies to new incoming messages. It does not move a mailbox’s history or replace an email migration.
- It does not, by itself, configure replies sent from the source address. Separately check the sending address shown when you reply.
- A forwarding rule and a mailbox are separate. In the standard cPanel setup described in its official documentation, an existing mailbox and a forwarder sharing the same address both receive messages. Confirm how your service behaves and monitor storage in the source mailbox.
Keep the existing mailbox and its contents during setup. If your aim is to close an old mailbox or move its archives, plan that transition with support. Do not use mailbox deletion as a shortcut for changing message retention.
Check it before relying on it
- Confirm that the destination is correct, is authorized to receive business mail, and has no rule that sends messages back to the source.
- Send a harmless test from a separate address. Check delivery, the spam folder and the copy in the source mailbox, if one exists.
- Test a reply. For important business use, repeat from another provider and review any delivery failures.
Forwarding can complicate message authentication and spam classification, as explained in Google’s guidance for forwarding to Gmail. Saving a rule therefore does not prove that every message will arrive.
If your team shares an address, is changing providers or is missing messages, contact Nuagerie. Include the service involved, source and destination addresses, and the time and time zone of a test. We can review your needs and help identify a suitable email configuration. Keep passwords and unnecessary confidential message contents out of the request.
