Installing CloudLinux with cPanel changes the server as a whole. Access to an individual cPanel account is not enough: the work requires an administrator with the necessary system privileges. This guide helps you choose a suitable path and prepare the checks before following the official procedure for your server.
Choose installation or conversion
New server: cPanel requires a freshly installed operating system. Select a supported combination and the installation order specified by both vendors. The cPanel installation procedure is not a repair or reinstallation procedure for an existing production cPanel server.
Existing cPanel server: review the conversion path in the official CloudLinux guide. Conversion retains the operating system’s major version; it does not replace a migration to a newer major version. If no compatible path applies to the server, plan a separate migration or upgrade.
Confirm prerequisites and recovery
Compare the exact operating system and cPanel versions, architecture and virtualization with the current cPanel requirements for CloudLinux. Also confirm available capacity, hostname, networking and the required licenses. An old list of compatible distributions is not enough to validate a new project.
- Prepare a recoverable backup of hosting accounts, databases and relevant configuration. Check the restoration method and keep the required recovery material outside the affected server.
- Confirm access to the provider’s console or rescue environment. Decide who will respond if boot or networking does not return normally.
- Schedule a maintenance window covering the expected reboot, affected services and recovery checks. Finish other package operations before starting.
- Record the selected path, versions and required options. Keep license keys and credentials out of unsecured exchanges.
Carry out the planned work
The administrator follows the vendor’s current procedure for this configuration. A successful preliminary check does not replace completion checks. If the process stops or reports an error, retain its messages and have the partial state examined before rerunning the tool or rebooting. Resolve boot warnings before the planned restart.
Verify service after installation
- Confirm license registration, update access, the expected boot result and integration in WHM.
- Test representative workflows: websites opening, application sign-in, PHP, database access and email where those services are hosted. Also check that backups and scheduled jobs resume.
- Configure the selected components according to their own requirements. The CloudLinux Manager guide describes setup and resource-limit management tools. Check the settings that apply to accounts before using them more broadly.
A database engine or version change needs its own compatibility and recovery plan. It is not an automatic step in this installation.
