Domain Name Privacy

Domain privacy concerns registration information that is visible publicly. It can limit the exposure of personal contact details. It is separate from securing the account used to manage the domain.

Which information is public?

Lookup services use protocols including RDAP or WHOIS, depending on the registry. Some information may be redacted under applicable rules even without a paid privacy option. The result depends on the extension, registrar, registrant type and service used.

Technical and administrative information may remain visible, such as the registrar, registration and expiry dates, status codes or nameservers. A redacted lookup result does not mean that the registrar lacks the registrant's contact details.

Privacy, proxy services and .CA domains

A privacy service can publish substitute contact information while keeping the customer as the registered holder. With a proxy service, the provider can be the registrant of record under its agreement. Review the terms, message forwarding, any fees and the circumstances in which information may be disclosed.

For .CA domains, CIRA enables privacy protection by default for individual registrants. Organizations follow different rules and can request an exception under CIRA's criteria. Always identify the actual registrant: a registration category should not be chosen to bypass those rules.

Check your domain

  1. Use the appropriate official lookup service and note which contact information is actually displayed.
  2. Check the registered holder and contact address in your account. Keep that information accurate and reachable.
  3. Ask which protections already apply and which options are eligible for the extension. Availability and cost are not the same for every domain.

Secure domain access as well

Contact privacy alone does not prevent domain hijacking or an unauthorized transfer. Use a unique password, multifactor authentication where available and the applicable transfer lock. Protect the recovery email account and monitor change and renewal notices as well.

To check the options for a domain managed through Nuagerie, open a request from your Client Area. Promptly report any registrant or configuration change you did not authorize.
